Quick DIY Fall Pumpkin Decorations

Thinking about making your own DIY fall pumpkin decorations? Check out this series of DIY projects where I show you an easy DIY pumpkin decoration!

Today I did a fall themed collaboration with Linn over at Darbin Orvar. We both would really like to see more women get their hands on some tools, so we each put together a simple tutorial on a fall decoration to give you some inspiration for picking up a tool and making something. I made the pumpkin decorations below. They are extremely simple and don’t require a lot of tools. Linn made a beautiful, rustic Fall sign from fence wood; you can check it out here.

The thing I love about these pumpkins is they don’t have to be perfect. They are also a great project to get your kiddos involved as well.

Here is a video showing the build process:

1) I started off by cutting strip of 3″. I used my jigsaw just to show that you don’t need a shop full of tools to get a project done. : ) I set up a temporary fence using a scrap straight piece of wood.

2) Once I had a few strips cut I then started on cutting the individual pieces. I made the two longest pieces 6″ (the middle two) and then stepped down 1/2″ each layer until I got to 3 1/2″. So I have 12 boards total for each pumpkin.
Note: at this point, my niece asked if she could join me in the shop and I said “heck yeah!”

3) With everything cut, I brought out my wood glue and we started gluing them together. We used paint cans to add some weight while they were drying.

4) To make a stem I grabbed some of the cut offs and used my jigsaw to cut pieces that were around 3/4″ wide and 1 1/4″ tall. Then we glued two of these pieces together to create one stem.

5) Next we put on a coat of primer.

6) Then once that was dry, we put on a coat of paint. I love the look of white pumpkins so I made a few white, then my niece wanted to make a few the classic orange. We also played around with different stem color combos as well. : )

7) Once the paint was dry, we used the wood glue again to glue the stems on. (Putting small paint cans on top to add weight while they dried)

And that’s it! Such a cute project but they go together so easily and quickly. I think I’ll make a few more and pass them out as gifts to my women co-workers.
